'Scuse phone-quality video, and Flickr cut it short (whole thing is on YT, here, if you're interested), but you get the idea. The low-pitched rumbling sound in the clip is, in fact, this tiny kitten's very big purr. I'd been calling him Harley because his purr reminded me of an idling Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He'd not been on his own for long--it took me only an hour to get him on my lap--but he was a bit thin, so he'd missed a few meals. I almost couldn't leave him at the shelter because as I was agonising over the decision, sitting in the car, he fell asleep on my lap and his little head just sort of "fell over" the way sleepy kittens' often do. As I sit and type this now, I know that he's still at the shelter, and although I don't think it's officially open tomorrow, I know that one of the two women who work there will be in to tend the animals. Allergies...well, I got used to Miff eventually, and as for Miff, he's technically my husband's kitteh, and I don't have a kitteh of my own, plus Harley's not another cat, he's just a small kitten, so...I guess we'll see. What I don't understand is how anyone could just abandon a little kitten (or any domestic animal) in the woods; what kind of person does it take to walk away?

Juniper playing Video 101

Juniper was found on a park trail by a young man who was fishing at the time.
She is the Wild Child of the shelter.
Juniper is an independent cat who is happiest on her own-stalking mice and exploring. A gorgeous cat she would be a fine addition to a house that wanted a cat who can keep themselves entertained.
Juniper has been with us since 7/24/2008.

Adam Sterns is the man on the left, Douglas the lead singer of The BMX Bandits is looking on, alongside one of our directors, and on the right is a man who blew our minds after pulling a stunt with signed cards mysterious appearing.

Our first stop at the zoo on this trip was to the Africian Savannah building. The birds and Giraffes were both very active as the zoo keepers were busy feeding both of them.

Nikon D5000 Video Capture: White Tiger Cubs Playing

This video capture was shot at full 250mm zoom in on my Nikon D5000. Bear in mind I am shooting this through a fence; as I'm trying to follow the action, you will, on occassion, see the fence (extremely out of focus) as almost a lighter color flare or an out of focus section of the picture.
These White Tiger Cubs are at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, FL and were a delight to watch! What you don't see is the mother tiger laying up on a perch, quietly observing.

Misfit drops the snake into the fountain, and it prompty goes into the one hole it can find (evolution at work). Right into the fountain motor.

Back-story: We noticed Misfit had something, and it was a snake! He dropped it into his water fountain, and we had to take it apart. We let him play with it for awhile, then put it in a bottle. The bottle drove him crazy -- he attacked the movement within every 5 minutes for days. It was his new favorite toy -- the pet of our pet. So we kept the snake in captivity for a week or so. He was not interested in our house crickets, which we joked that Misfit caught for him. After a week, it not only needed probably needed food, but also stank, so we released it. It did need to be "watered" a few times during the week, too, which no doubt increased the stink-power.

TUNDRA SWANS IN FLIGHT

A pair(mates?) of Tundra Swan near Bear River MBR, Utah. Every year up to 50,000 of these swans stop over on the marshes of the Great Salt Lake on their way to and from their arctic nesting ground. Several thousand usually winter here too. One of their most important staging areas on the continent. I love the quivering, cooing, yelping calls they make(see my swan video at www.flickr.com/photos/bryanto/2423801670 ), and when there is a large flock of them, the noise they make is like a symphony.

Ai Weiwei Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads
Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads is the first major US public art project by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. The installation comprises a dozen bronze sculptures, each roughly ten feet tall, that represent the signs of the Chinese zodiac: eleven real-world animals (snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, pig, rat, ox, tiger, and rabbit) and one mythical creature (dragon). The sculptures are re-envisioned and enlarged versions of the original eighteenth-century heads that were designed during the Qing dynasty for the fountain clock of the Yuanming Yuan [Garden of Perfect Brightness], an imperial retreat outside Beijing, which was pillaged in 1860.
The work has toured six cities round the world. In the installation at the Hirshhorn, the heads are placed on a north, south, east, west axis and correspond to the astrological positions of the signs of the Chinese zodiac (an individual's sign is determined by year of birth). While the piece rises questions about repatriation and authenticity, the artist has noted, "To mke Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads, I had to first put it into categories of my concerns.... Dealing with fake and real, true value, aesthetics -- all those questions concern me. Also, as a contemporary artist, I have the possibility of putting the work in a museum. When that happens, the work itself will carry different meanings, its own experience."
About the artist:
Ai Weiwei is one of China's most prolific and provocative contemporary artists. His work includes sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific architectural installations. he is best know for his collaboration with Herzog & de Meuron on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium as well as his embrace of the internet and social media.

A two hour train to Nagano, followed by another 45 minute train ride to Yudanaka, followed by a 15 minute bus ride, followed by another 30 minutes of walking uphill. All to see some monkeys. Was it worth it? Hell yeah!

The A B C's of animals, applied to a cow

Jack Hamm explains in his book "How To Draw Animals" how a generic four legged animal can be constructed from a bunch of rectangles, and how you can use that technique to draw any animal in side view (profile).
Here I've used a photo of a cow and applied the rectangles to it, before dealing with the exact shape of the animal. Getting the parts in the correct positions and at the right size is always a problem when you're not familiar with a subject. Having a method to roughly estimate the structure of an animal is a handy trick to have in your bag of artist's tricks.
This drawing was recorded as a video on my iPod Touch and uploaded to my Shorties Ustream channel.

Hank video

Hank is an an FIV+ cat who has remained robust and healthy over the years. Large, longhaired and very handsome, Hank is laid-back and mellow. When he is in the mood, he will sit in your lap.
Hank came to Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue in 2004 when the shelter received a call from a pit bull rescue group who found Hank injured in a junkyard. Our volunteers rescued him, and the shelter had his wound treated.
He now resides in John’s room where he enjoys spending time in the secured outdoor enclosure and napping in one of the covered cat beds inside the shelter.
Hank would love to find a home of his own after spending 7 years at the shelter, If he sounds like the cat for you, come on down and adopt Hank today.
Rattlesnake in the Manzanita Bushes

Stay a good five feet away from that bush
Listen carefully at the beginning of this footage you can hear the end of the rattle sound. The main sound startled me a good 15 paces away. If there is one regret I have from this hike, it would be that I did not think to start filming right away and hear more of it it!
This is the first time I've encountered an angry rattler, though I've many times wondered what it would be like and if it would end badly.... Happily this time ended super cool and we just continued on our merry separate ways.
If you notice most of the snakes and other animals appear rather relaxed in my photos, and not in their defensive posture and this is because I tread well, like a ninja.

Billie Bob Video

Billie Bob is sociable but was under-socialized as a kitten. He will rub against your legs and purr to be petted. He gets a long well with some cats, but sometimes prefers to have the attention all to himself and will strike at cats who try to steal it away from him. Billie Bob loves to hang out in the backyard on sunny days and sit on the laps of his favorite people. Billie Bob came to the shelter when he and 3 others were found in a home with his deceased owner.

WESTERN SCREECH OWL SONG

I toke this video after I had called in some Screech Owls up City Creek Canyon, Wasatch mnts., Utah, by mimicking their call. I know of a likely nest site there. At one point I had 3 of them in the Oak brush calling and chasing each other around. I guess I had caused quite a stir. One of them even dove at me and practically touched my face with its wing feathers. I sometimes hear these owls in my back yard at night too.

These lambs were less than an hour old, I think. We heard a lamb's first bleat. You haven't lived... Also, they were just learning to walk. And the mother was licking & sniffing them.
