Pet of the Week: Mackenzie, 7480625
animal pound
Mackenzie is a beautiful 10 year old female German Shepherd/Mix who weighs about 53 pounds. She is back at Lollypop Farm through no fault of her own; her owners were moving and could not take her along.

This wonderful girl is looking for a forever home to retire to. She is an absolute lady on her walks, when taking treats, rides well in the car and adapts well to new situations!

Don’t let her age fool you…she loves her walks and will have you moving at a brisk pace. Mackenzie is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take her home free of charge!

Pet of the Week: Medusa, 4689334

Medusa is a talkative, social girl who likes to follow her people around. This 5-year-old, 15 pound sweetie is at Lollypop Farm for a third time through no fault of her own. She was found and her owner did not come to claim her.

Medusa has lived with small children and cats, and one of her previous owners described her as "easygoing." As easygoing as she is, though, that doesn't extend to dogs! Medusa would prefer a canine-free household, please!

This pretty kitty hopes to find a loving forever home soon! Come meet Medusa today -- she'd love to meet you!

"Captain Crunch was captured from the wild by Tony Hunter, a nuisance alligator trapper for the state of Florida. He was taken from Lake Seminole near Tallahassee, Florida when it was determined by the state he was a danger to humans and their pets. He had actually learned to leave the lake at night and stalk sleeping dogs in the yards of their owners. Alligators are great at adapting to their surroundings!
When captured, Captain Crunch was officially measured at 13'2" long and weighed 782 pounds. Captain Crunch was also tested by Florida State University professor, Dr. Greg Erikson, who was working through National Geographic, for the amount of force of his bite. Out of hundreds of alligators tested, Captain Crunch set the official world record for bite force by an American Alligator at 2,982 pounds. That record still stands today and likely will never be broken."

Pet of the Weeek: Walter, 14036738
animal pound
Walter is a Greyhound/mix who weighs 56 pounds and is just a little over a year old. He came to Lollypop Farm because his previous owner felt he wasn’t getting the attention he deserves.

Walter enjoys being outside where he can stretch his long legs and take a nice run around the play yard. He is a playful boy who loves treats!

A home with children over the age of 16 is recommended due to the fact that Walter has no history living with children. Walter needs to meet the whole family, including all dogs in the household; to make everyone will get along. If Walter has caught your eye, please come to meet him, we think you just might fall in love with this long, lean, leggy fellow!

I think a critter took off with the second biscotti. The paper that held a pound cake has started wearing away.

The yellow things aren't yellow - they're mini donuts that molded before I ate them. How could I let that happen?!

How easy it was to make this: Dug up some dirt from the landscaping in my backyard and threw it in a plastic bin I had lying around. Done. I hear worms are good for this!

The gray wolf (Canis lupus), also known as the timber wolf or, simply, wolf, is a mammal of the order Carnivora. The gray wolf is the largest member of the genus Canis. Its shoulder height ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 meters (26–36 inches) and its weight typically varies between 32 and 62 kilograms (70–135 pounds). As evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies, the gray wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris).

The gray wolf was once abundant over much of North America and Eurasia. However, as a result of habitat destruction and widespread hunting, it now inhabits a very limited portion of its former range. In some regions, gray wolves are listed as endangered or threatened, although considered as a whole, wolves are regarded as a species of least concern for extinction according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Wolves are still hunted in many areas of the world for sport and as perceived threats to livestock. Kazakhstan is currently thought to have the largest wolf population of any nation in the world, with as many as 90,00, versus some 60,000 for Canada, which is three and a half times larger.

California sea lions are intelligent and playful - and their noisy barking (ARR-ARR-ARR-ARR!!!) is unmistakable. Here among the fishing boats in San Pedro many lounge around waiting for a fisherman to use them as nature's scrap fish disposal.

Color ranges from chocolate brown in males to a lighter, golden brown in females. Males 850 pounds (390 kg) and seven feet (2.1 m) in length. Females grow to 220 pounds (110 kg) and up to six feet (1.8 m) in length.

They have a "dog-like" face, and at around five years of age, males develop a bony bump on top of their skull called a sagittal crest.

Pet of the Week: Lucy, 14404374
animal pound
Lucy is a super sweet 7-year-old German Shepherd/Beagle mix who weighs 62 pounds. Her family was moving and Lucy did not get to go with them. She’s a wonderful mellow girl who walks nicely on a leash and seems to have a smile on her face all the time!

Lucy loves attention and going for car rides. She has lived with both cats and dogs before and gets along well with everyone. A home with children over the age of six is recommended due to her age.

Lucy is available in the Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take her home free of charge. Please come out and meet her, she is just a doggone good dog!

Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis)

The horns can weigh up to 30 pounds (14 kg), while the sheep themselves weigh up to 300 pounds (140 kg). Recent genetic testing indicates that there are three distinct subspecies of Ovis canadensis, one of which is endangered: Ovis canadensis sierrae. Sheep originally crossed to North America over the Bering land bridge from Siberia: the population in North America peaked in the millions, and the bighorn sheep entered into the mythology of Native Americans. However, by 1900 the population had crashed to several thousand. Conservation efforts (in part by the Boy Scouts) have restored the population. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bighorn_sheep

More shots from Animal Adventure at London Zoo.

This is a hands on area for kids.

You can touch the animals, but you have to wash you hands afterwards (I was not going to touch any animal, so no need to wash hands here - got photos to take of the animals).

At London Zoo - this area is Animal Adventure. An area that was opened in 1994 thanks to a donation from the family of the late Ambika Paul of one million pounds.

The four year old Ambika died in 1968, but loved going to the Zoo during her short life.

In Animal Adventure at London Zoo, these are donkeys.

Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis)
animal pound
At first glance, pygmy hippopotamuses resemble their larger relatives, Nile hippopotamuses. But, on closer examination, several differences can be noted. Pygmy hippopotamuses are smaller. They weigh 350 to 550 pounds (158.8 to 249.5 kg), stand about two and a half feet (0.8 m) tall at the shoulder, and measure about five feet (1.5 m) from head to tail. They are more pig-like in shape than Nile hippopotamuses, with proportionately smaller heads and proportionately longer legs and necks. Their tail hairs are branched, not unbranched as found on Nile hippopotamuses.

BEAR LAKE CUTTHROAT TROUT

On the way back from Colorado I stopped over at the family cabin in Strawberry valley to save an hour driving in the dark. In the morning I decided to try my luck in Bryant's bay of the reservoir. At first I was using a silver spinner, and the fish would fallow it, but wouldn't strike. I had heard from some fisherman that a brass spinner works best if the Suns out, but a lot of what fisherman say should be taken with a gain of salt. But I tried it anyway, and sure enough on the first cast I watched this monster rise from the deep and rush at the spinner. You can tell by how fast they go after it whether they are going to strike, and she was moving fast and furious, and hit it hard!. I set the hook and hauled her in. She was over 20"in long and weighed more than 3 pounds. The biggest trout I have ever caught, keeping in mind that I will only fish for native, wild trout, which usually means fishing small streams above 9,000ft where they rarely get over 15"in. What a Beauty! I caught another little 9" trout on the second cast, and on the 3rd another monster as big or bigger than this one, but it got loose before I could land it.

Fish story

Fish story

Divine fish appears with message for mankind
by J.F. Chénier

Chennai, India In what is believed to be his tenth incarnation, Lord Vishnu “the Preserver” appeared to 87 year old Sag Aloo, a fisherman from the state of Tamil Nadu in India, as a 0.73 kg (1.6 pound) red snapper.

Sag had just pulled in his nets after a long day without a single catch, and was despondently rowing back to shore, when he heard a loud thud behind him. “When I turned around, I saw that a fish had leapt into the boat. He was a good size and very meaty - definitely a fryer.”

It was then that the fish spoke, announcing that he was the Lord Vishnu, and had an important message for mankind. At first, Sag was skeptical, “After all, it is not every day that you meet the Lord Vishnu – Ganesha or Hanuman, sure thing, but Lord Vishnu? It all seemed very fishy to me.”

A discussion ensued, and eventually Sag was convinced. “He just knew too many things that only Vishnu would know.”

Sag, who had received a cell phone for his last birthday, immediately called his family on shore so they could prepare for Vishnu’s arrival. “My wife is very, very devout, and was tremendously excited – and my grandson, who has been wanting a pet, asked if we could keep him.” Looking to the horizon, and choked with emotion, Sag added, “Everyone was so very happy.”

When his call ended, Sag turned back to find that Lord Vishnu, who had been making an “annoying throat clearing noise” just a few moments before, was dead. Sag was despondent – and then a miracle happened. The image of Buddha appeared in the dead fish’s eye.

“There is no question the fish was Lord Vishnu,” says Professor Nehru of Chennai Community College. “The image was very clear, and any semi-literate person would have immediately realized that there was nothing unusual about Vishnu coming to Earth as a fish. In his first incarnation, Lord Vishnu was the fish Matsya, and warned of an impending flood. Unfortunately, the message he wished to share this time will forever remain a mystery.”

Thanks to the miracle image, Lord Vishnu brought a very good price at the Kottivakkam market, and was, according to the purchaser (who asked to remain anonymous), “a bit tough, but really quite tasty.”

What was I thinking?
animal pound
I was thinking that I want the kitties (name withheld to protect the not-so innocent) to be has happy as possible while I'm away. I want to prevent as many behavioral "accidents" as possible. After hauling this 8.00 and 75 pound monstrosity inside the house and up a flight of stairs, all three cats went to investigate the old kitty condo that I had just moved out of the way to make room for the new one. They investigated the old one by circling and then climbing it and then sniffing and scratching it. Are you kidding me you guys?

This picture is completely staged. I had to put treats on all the different levels to get them onto the new kitty skyscraper. They all ended up really liking it. Thank heavens.

Mack is acting better and hopefully he hasn't urinated anywhere that I just haven't discovered yet. Last night I got 50cc of fluids into him by myself and have been able to get all his meds into him. Now none of them are very interested in the wet c/d but when I get up in the morning, the plates are mostly clean so I guess they are breaking down and eating it. It's not like they're going to starve because they are eating the dry c/d. I love these guys but do you know how expensive it is to have three cats on a prescription diet?!

Pepper is a total sweetheart! She’s fun-loving and playful! This girl has energy to spare, and would love to find an active family who will spend time with her doing fun stuff inside and out.

Pepper enjoys playing with other dogs, but we don't know how she feels about cats. If you’re interested in meeting Pepper, bring the whole family out Lollypop Farm, including any dogs in the household to make sure everyone gets along.

Please come meet this sweet, deserving girl…She just might steal your heart right in time for Valentine’s Day!

Pet of the Week: Charlie, 11338435

Charlie is as cute as they come! He’s a 3-year-old GoldenDoodle, who weighs 58 pounds. His previous owners didn't have enough time to spend with him, so he's looking for someone who does!

Charlie’s a strong dog who has a mind of his own when it comes to taking a walk. He sits beautifully to have his collar put on, but then thinks it’s a race to get out the door. He enjoys playing with toys, loves to fetch and just race around. Charlie’s a very smart dog and really wants to please, although his manners need a refresher course, so training class is a must.

Make sure you’re prepared for this energetic guy, and don't just fall in love with his pretty face. Do your research, know what to expect and be prepared to dedicate some time to help Charlie become the very best he can be. He has lived with both dogs and cats, and a home with kids over the age of 12 is suggested. Come out to meet Charlie today!

A large adult American alligator's weight and length is 800 pounds (360 kg) and 13 feet (4.0 m) long[citation needed], but can grow to 14.5 feet (4.4 m) long and weigh over 1,000 pounds (450 kg).[2] The largest ever recorded was found in Louisiana and measured 19 feet 2 inches (5.84 m).[3] The Chinese alligator is smaller, rarely exceeding 7 feet (2.1 m) in length. Alligators have an average of 75 teeth. Alligators are only native to the United States and China.

American alligators are found in the southeast United States: all of Florida and Louisiana, the southern parts of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, coastal South and North Carolina, Eastern Texas, the southeast corner of Oklahoma and the southern tip of Arkansas. According to the 2005 Scholastic Book of World Records, Louisiana is the state with the largest alligator population.[6] The majority of American alligators inhabit Florida and Louisiana, with over a million alligators in each state.

Dama Gazelle calf born at National Zoo

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is proud to announce the birth of a female dama gazelle calf Sunday, Nov. 2, between 6:45 a.m. and 8 a.m., to 2-year-old dam Adara and an unnamed 1-year-old sire. The calf weighed 4.6 kilograms (10 pounds).

Twenty-four hours after birth, the calf was given a neonate exam that confirmed the calf’s sex. The exam also confirmed signs of nursing and the calf has since been observed nursing numerous times. The calf is healthy, very active and thriving in her new environment.

She will be on exhibit in the coming months.

This birth is very significant for the dama gazelle population. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List of Threatened Species lists the dama gazelle as critically endangered.
It is estimated that fewer than 500 remain in the wild and are under constant threat due to hunting and poaching.

A total of four dama gazelles reside at the Zoo and five at the Zoo’s Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Va.
